Melania Trump inspired by Michelle Obama, still won't denounce husband's racism
By now everyone has probably heard of the scandal surrounding Republican Nominee Donald Trump's wife Malania Trump's speech day one of the Republican National Convention, where it was discovered that she plagiarized about two paragraphs from Michelle Obama's 2008 Democratic National Convention speech.
Although Malania claimed to have written the speech mostly by herself, the family's speech writer and reported family friend Meredith McIver has stepped forward to take blame for the fiasco, and even turn in her letter of resignation. Donald refused to accept it, calling the PR nightmare "an innocent mistake".
In the statement released by Mclver on the event, she writes "In working with Melania Trump on her recent First Lady speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American people. A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama."
She goes on to say Melania read off a few passages from Mrs. Obama's speech as examples which she wrote down and then inserted into the final speech by accident.
The fact that Melania quotes the First Lady as an inspiration at all is surprising, given her husband Donald's feelings concerning our president and his family.
"I think the only difference between me and the other candidates is that I'm more honest and my women are more beautiful" -Donald Trump when joking about the possibility of running for president.
Obviously, not every woman shares the same beliefs as their husband, however Melania certainly doesn't seem to be speaking out against him during any of her supportive speeches and interviews this campaign.
These aren't even the tip of the iceberg when it comes to examples of racist and xenophobic quotes from the presidential candidate.
“I think the guy is lazy,” Trump said of a black employee, according to John O’Donnell, former president of Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. “And it’s probably not his fault because laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is, I believe that. It’s not anything they can control.”
You would think as an immigrant herself from Sevnica, Slovenia, Melania would be more than a little frightened by the way her husband talks about people not born in this country, and would even have a soft spot for the refugees trying to find a new life in the Land of Opportunity. However, she stands complacently by his side while he continues to degrade the lives and struggles of these human beings.
“Somebody’s doing the raping. The thing is women being raped, well, then who’s doing the raping?”
As I recall, the answer to that questing is people like Brock Turner, a white, american, teenager.
And just in case there was any doubt about the way he feels:
“They have to go.”
While it's refreshing to hear not everybody in the Trump family shares Donald Sr.'s opinions on the Obama family, it's a little unnerving to know the potential First Lady isn't confident enough to stand up to her husband. If Melania is too scared to say something, what does that mean for the rest of us under a potential Trump presidency?
